Viscose or rayon is a man-made fibre, made from wood pulp, which on the face of it seems more sustainable. However, often the tree planted is eucalyptus, which draws up large amounts of water, causing problems in sensitive landscapes. To make Viscose, the wood pulp treated with hazardous chemicals such as caustic soda and sulphuric acid. Viscose has a silky appearance and feel, and the ability to breathe in a manner similar to cotton.
