Pattern staining is a term used to describe patterns on surfaces textiles caused by deposits of dust, the amount that varies according to the relative thermal conductivity of different paths of the structural background. The more highly conductive (colder) areas collect more dust that those of poor conductivity, thus the pattern of the underlying structure shows. The dust is often carried toward the surface by convection currents.
