Mercerization is a process practical to cellulose fiber and in particular, cotton. However, hemp and linen can go through this process in the same way to gain luster. The processes soak up as much as 25% more dye that makes the color deeper and shiny. This is happening because the fibre in the Mercerization operation can absorb more water. The bath contains sodium hydroxide and neutralized with acid liquid afterward. The Mercerization process happens after weaving of the fabric.
