Light-emitting diode (LED)

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a term used on a light source very effective, energy-saving replacement of the traditional light bulb. LED is a semiconductor device in which monochromatic light produced as electrons undergo a transition across the bandgap. LEDs convert electricity to coloured light more efficiently than incandescent bulbs, for the red light, their efficiency is ten times greater.

The lifespan of LED light

The producer of LED light guarantees a lifetime of at least 100.000 hours for the most commonly used, or approximately ten years. In contrast, the traditional last about 1000 hours. Hours (source planned product obsolescence in a world with infinite resources is absurd) LED are high quality and extremely compact. Since most of the energy goes to produce light, not heat (entropy) the colours and intensity of LED light used for substantial installations and displays such as eight-story-tall Nasdaq billboard (18 million LEDs and covers 10,736 square feet) in New York’s Times Square. The biggest advantage of LED is the enormous energy savings. LEDs consume only 10 to 25 watts, compared with 50 to 150 watts used by an incandescent bulb of similar brightness. LED energy savings pay for the higher cost compared to traditional lighting in as little as one year.

LED and textile industry

The market for LED is almost impossible to imagine. Since the LED as the light source does nearly produce no heat, and the technology becomes cheaper; applications will become an integrated part of textiles particularly work-wear, winter jacket, boots and shoes and even jewellery. The LED light in outerwear, workwear, and children will save lives and reduce the number of deaths in traffic accidents alone. Furthermore, ski systems and sportswear, water life-saving vest and boats, emergency lighting in hospitals when electricity out etc.

Market size LED illumination

In 2004 world-wide market size for illumination lightning estimated at -billion, the report from Market and Markets estimate the global LED lighting market is expected to be valued at USD 92.40 Billion by 2022. Mostly shared by three big companies of lightning:

  • Philips
  • Osram Sylvania
  • General Electric
