Environmental Kuznets curve (EKC)

Environmental Kuznets curve is a term applied to environmental burdens. The Kuznets curve hypothesizes that economic inequalities increase before decreasing while a country is developing. It is based on the rationale that, once basic needs are fulfilled, a society will have the means and the will to deal with environmental issues. Thus, the use of natural resources and/or the emission of pollutants will first increase the level of income and decrease beyond some turning point at higher income levels.
