Electroactive polymers (intelligent textiles)
Electroactive polymer is a term used to describe materials that have actuating properties are based mainly on polymers. They can be defined as intelligent textiles since these fabrics or materials respond to a signal (stimulus). From a historical perspective mostly inorganic materials or compounds have been in focus regarding growth and exploration in the field of R&D regarding polymer development. Even malicious limitation of polymers material as they generate much lower strain than inorganic materials. Nevertheless, polymer gels particularly because it is electroactive which differs in various ways from solid polymer materials can be considered physically cross-linked (chemically) creates a three-dimensional network material that in its right mode cab; change by swelling and dee-swelling volume in both asymmetric/symmetric deformation.
These so called triggers can be classified into two different classes or categories:
- physical triggers
- chemical triggers
