Chronic effects

Chronic effects are a term used to describe the long-lasting results of exposure to a toxin; can be a permanent change caused by a single, acute exposure or a continuous, low-level exposure.

Exposure time frames

  • Acute exposure
    • Short term Minutes, hrs, days
    • To relatively high levels of contaminant
    • Acute effects from mild (eye irritation) to an extreme asthma attack
  • Chronic exposure
    • Long term years – lifetime
    • Low levels of contaminating
    • Neurological problems, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary
