Chronic effects are a term used to describe the long-lasting results of exposure to a toxin; can be a permanent change caused by a single, acute exposure or a continuous, low-level exposure.

- Acute exposure
- Short term Minutes, hrs, days
- To relatively high levels of contaminant
- Acute effects from mild (eye irritation) to an extreme asthma attack
- Chronic exposure
- Long term years – lifetime
- Low levels of contaminating
