Nelson Mandela is a South African anti-apartheid politician and revolutionary which served as President of South Africa between 1994-1999.
He was the first elected fully representative, black President to hold the office in South Africa, the former apartheid regime.
In his years as President Nelson Mandela focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalized inequality, racism, and poverty.
He was a Xhosa born to the Thembu royal family and educated in law at the University of Witwatersrand and Fort Hare.
As young he was an active member of Youth League in ANC involved in anti-colonial politics.
In 1990, an international campaign lobbied for his release, and Nelson Mandela became a free man after served 27 years in prison, first on Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison.
He has received global praise for his political work and anti-apartheid position and received more than 250 awards, in 1993 Nobel Peace Prize, Soviet Order of Lenin and the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom
