Amazonian deforestation is a serious problem with global consequences. Not only does the destruction of these tropical forests disrupt biological diversity and other land uses, but it is now believed that the removal of this vital terrain is contributing to the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere. Long term results of this phenomenon are now linked to climate change and fund’s performance.
The Amazon system plays a significant role in the world’s climate as it produces about 20% of the world’s oxygen supply and with the Amazon drainage basin covers over 8 million km2 and has the largest rainforest on earth. 6400 km long Amazon River with its source in the Andes to its mouth in the Atlantic, and the drainage basin includes a variety of landscapes with an incredible biodiversity, both aquatic and terrestrial.
