The connection between Buddhism and sustainabiliy

“To live a pure unselfish life, one must count nothing as one’s own in the midst of abundance” Buddha

There is an honest connection between Buddhism and sustainable living; when looking at the quotes from Buddha and thousands alike in Buddhism philosophy and wisdom; it is clearly discovered that nature is present in numerous parts of his teachings. The importance of Earths elements and the connected organic symbiosis such as the water are significant insight to the right meaning of the Buddha quotes above. Whereof, today even water has been capitalized. this must end as we are a part of the water connect to our lives. Both sun and the water is the most sustainable sources of energy and has for thousands of years supplied our daily basis need; however, there is another aspect to it Buddha teaches us; not to kill any living beings, including the grass, trees and mountains, that everything is connected and finally, the concept of true compassion.

The aspect of meditation

In meditation, one of the main aspects and reasons to do it is the concept of being in the present time, nor in the past or future. When we walk we feel the goodness of the sun that warms out skin and raindrops cooling the face; this is to live in harmony with nature. When Buddha teaches us not to kill any living beings, he points out that other creatures have the same right to live in nature, and this is clearly to cherish diversity of Ecology and balance.

A visualization whereof, active Buddhism and connection to environmentalism comes enlightened is the Buddhism philosophy of non-violence and avoid killings. Every action that harm nature is the not to kill by any means all sentient beings, including trees and mountain. For example, will the concept of greed, over consumption and clinching to materialism not be in harmony with Buddhism view on sustainability and environmental protection. This way of thinking teaches us to live in balance regarding water, food and natural resources. Remember Buddha gained insight and realization in the many years meditating sitting under a tree and when he sat by the river and understood that to flow with nature, not fighting against is the only way to be in nature, not outside or superior.

Humans can be never tame nature and what we like to think is that nature is here for us when it is the opposite; we are here for nature. Buddha wisdom that everything is connected and that actions performed in a negative direction will have the impact now or in the future, here or elsewhere. Buddha quotes on happiness, awareness, truth and compassion are all valuable understandings of environmental care taking.
