Sustainable design or Eco fashion is the new revolution in denim jeans. Not only is the green wave a mega trend it has become a brand new way of living. The biggest Denim Jean’s moments in fashion culture, who, when and where?  First out was the American punk rock band The Ramones, Then Kurt Cobain, Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando and today James Dean a true America style icon.

The car crash

On September 30, 1955 died James Dean on his way in an ambulance to the Paso Robles War Memorial Hospital, 28 miles away from where the crash happened. In the ambulance was his Porsche factory-trained mechanic, Rolf Wütherich who survived the fatal crash. The car Dean’s drove a new Porsche 550 Spyder supposed to start for the weekend sports car races at Salinas, California, but the car did not have enough break-in miles prior to the race. Therefore, recommended his Porsche mechanic to take the new Spyder to add more seat time. Dean should not ever make it to the hospital;  pronounced dead-on arrival local time 6:20 p.m. Dean died about the age of 24. He was the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and whatever story can create the bigger and eternal stardom than this.

Dean was the icon of teenage disillusionment.

His role as Jim in A rebel without a cause, created the icon of teenage disillusionment, where no one, not even his peers can understand him. All American teenagers could identify themselves with Jim, and they felt exactly the same way as their parents or society which did not understand the music they danced to, the jeans they wore or the movies they liked.

Dean is the restless drifting loner, where Marlon Brando is extroverted leading his gang of 40 black rebels on motorcycles in the movie; the wild One where he plays the iconic rebellious character Johnny. James however introverted, like the teenagers with pimples who are sexual drifted between sexes; he is the anti-hero and outsider.  Therefore, James Dean is untouchable and almost impossible to understand.

People get attracted by this mystic soul and not only did he attract girls but boys as well. Dean has always been the style icon of gay culture, as much as this good-looking boy loved by girls. I guess he was too handsome to be a straight.

Finally, he played Jett Rink in Giant from 1956; the movie is an epic portrayal of a powerful Texas ranching family challenged by changing times and the coming of big oil.

The American film industry made denim jeans incredible popular, not only did the stylist of Hollywood cinema understand to use it as a symbol of the dark, mysterious, anti-hero, however, the hero himself loved wearing it and it became a dangerous symbol. Jeans got worn by rebellious drop-outs, connected to dirty sex, booze, drugs and rock music. In several states, jean was banned of wearing public schools and college.

James Dean together with Marlon Brando literally changed the way teenagers perceived what was cool. Their dress down style was the change in fashion culture forever, replacing the dress up code in the 50s and the next decades.

This new jeans and fashion  culture was perceived as something dangerous; connected to drugs, motorcycle gangs and rebellious attitude, most often the actor played the role as the loner, anti-hero and outsider in Hollywood stories. A hero who stood upon the established, the enormous power of  course movies like Rebel Without A Cause, East Of Eden, The wild one, On the waterfront, A Streetcar Named Desire and Jailhouse Rock.
